REBUILDING UKRAINE
LEVEL ONE mission-accomplished
In my last newsletter, I explained our plans to rebuild houses in Ukraine. We are on track and moving forward. During the first quarter of this year, I led the way to research and organize the logistics to ship two containers with materials for three small apartments and humanitarian aid. The process started in Indiana at Borkholder Buildings and Supply, our long-time friends and partners. It was still snowing when we loaded the containers and sent them on their 7-week journey. Their route: Indiana, Illinois, New York, Poland, to Ukraine.
By mid-April, I arrived in Ukraine to continue working logistics with the missionary couple who owns this project. There are many details required to assure that containers keep moving fluidly through each process and do not get stuck at a port due to errors in paperwork. It was tense during the 7th week when delays at Ukrainian customs pushed the arrival of the containers to the same Saturday that builders were arriving from America. God was faithful to cause all things to work together for good. By Monday morning, our two teams of American and Ukrainian builders came together outside a small Western Ukrainian town to frame the first apartment complex. It will house internally displaced refugees (IDPs). Within 4 days, we framed the 1,890-square-foot 3-unit apartment complex using Borkholder’s Rapid Frame System. Our Ukrainian brothers were thrilled to learn new methods of wood framing and bonded with the American brothers for lifelong friendships.
LEVEL TWO Mission
Brothers Dima & Sergei Golub have partnered with us to develop wood framing in Ukraine since 2008 when we built the church for their father, Pastor Pavel. From one week of training back then, they’ve built their construction business and their crews. They live very far away from this Western city, requiring long expensive drives over treacherous roads to help the missionaries accomplish their goals. Their church family lives in the Southeast, really close to the war zone. In spite of missiles flying over the roof of the church, landing in the road and not exploding; bombs blowing up all three schools in their town; sleepless nights sitting in the safest corridor of their home praying, the Golub family dedicates themselves to God’s service. Their influence in their region is outstanding.
We planned that at some point far into the future, our American group would help the Ukrainians create their own truss factories. That plan, AFTER THE WAR, would eliminate shipping containers, help develop the devastated economy, provide local jobs, and increase the speed of helping to rebuild Ukrainian communities.
With Dima matching his skillful talents to Borkholder’s innovations, these incredible men have already started developing our first Ukrainian truss factory. We are shocked and amazed at God’s creative power and provision to overcome countless impossibilities during this crazy time of war.
